It’s 2016, and there’s a new xXx movie coming out, and those are really bad for SEO. Remember back in the early 2000s when Vin Diesel was king of movies and he was quitting potential franchises like they were going out of fashion. He refused to come back for 2 Fast 2 Furious in order to bugger off and make xXx with The Fast & the Furious’ director Rob Cohen. Then he didn’t come back for the next xXx with Ice Cube stepping up to the plate.
Well, Mr. Diesel has now realised he can’t start anything new and also that retreading old ground can pay dividends. He’s already played Riddick, his breakout role in two subsequent films and more significantly, has been a driving force behind transforming Fast & Furious into a super franchise.
Now, xXx has potential as a franchise despite its apparent death back in 2005. It’s a spy movie, incorporating extreme sports and that can mean you can do incredibly dumb stunts, many of which are on show in this trailer. It’s like the movie that the people behind that pointless Point Break remake really wanted to make.
In this movie, Xander Cage (who apparently everyone has been clamouring to see return) is called back into action to assemble a rag-tag group of misfits in order to fight the bad guys. This sounds very familiar. The thing is, turning Fast & Furious into a pseudo-spy caper series has been a weird retrofit. With this, you actually have the infrastructure for a spy team who can do cool things.
Nina Dobrev, Ruby Rose and Toni Collette also star alongside franchise mainstay Samuel L. Jackson as Agent Augustus Gibbons.
xXx: Return of Xander Cage arrives in cinemas 17 January 2017
