It’s often been said that there hasn’t been a good movie based on a video game. People who say that have clearly never watched Super Mario Bros, Tomb Raider 2, Wing Commander or Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, all highly regarded modern classics.
Duncan Jones, highly regarded director of Moon and Source Code, is next to try and make a successful film franchise from a successful game franchise with Warcraft (optimistically title Warcraft: The Beginning in some territories). He should stand a good chance with a script written by Chris Metzen, a game designer who has been working on Warcraft since the inaugural game Warcraft: Orcs and Humans released in 1994. With his creative vision for the world combined with Jones’ storytelling ability, they could create something quite special.
For those who don’t know Warcraft was originally a series of real time strategy games, which have now evolved into a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) where Orcs and Humans battle in a fantasy world. It’s fair to say that it’s a global phenomenon which means that there’s a massive in-built fan base but it could be a tricky sell for general audiences, but perhaps the Middle Earth movies proved that fantasy can translate to the mainstream.
The cast includes Dominic Cooper, Ben Foster, Ruth Negga, Toby Kebbell, Paula Patton and Clancy Brown.
Warcraft arrives in UK cinemas on 3 June 2016
