While the stars of 2011’s Attack the Block have gone on to star in the world’s biggest sci-fi franchises, director Joe Cornish has taken longer than you might expect to get his second film off the ground. But 2019 brings The Kid Who Would Be King, a modern take on Arthurian legend. It looks like the sort of film that they don’t make any more, until they made that Jumanji sequel last year which reminded everyone just how great and universal family films can be.
Hopefully, this can continue in the same vein, mixing childhood friendships and anxieties with just a little bit of magic. The trailer certainly makes it look fun, breezy and distinctly British (apart from the title which is definitely American). And the effects look excellent too. What’s not to like?
Louis Ashbourne Serkis stars as the lead with support from Dean Chaumoo, Tom Taylor, Rhianna Dorris, Angus Imrie with Rebecca Ferguson as Morgana and Patrick Stewart as Merlin. Expect a cameo from Cornish’s old comedy partner Adam Buxton in a cameo too.
The Kid Who Would Be King arrives in cinemas on 15 February 2019.
