The X-Files returns to FOX in January 2016 for the first new episode since 2002. The classic line-up of Mulder and Scully are back with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returning to the roles  of Mulder and Scully that made their name. From this trailer, it seems that creator Chris Carter is bringing back many of the elements that defined the original show, with Mulder back in a suit and apparently at the FBI working under Mitch Pileggi’s Walter Skinner. Other confirmed returning stars including Annabeth Gish and WilliamB Davis alongside a number of newcomers including Robbie Amell, Lauren Ambrose, Rhys Darby and Joel McHale.

Producers have confirmed that the central pairing will no longer be romantically involved which should bring back some of the sexual tension which made their relationship so intriguing. Then again it’s not really about that. With this six-episode mini-series, it appears the show is ditching the monster of the week elements and focussing solely on the alien conspiracy which came to dominate the show, some might say to its detriment. The canvas of this long  form storytelling may allow Chris Carter to finish what he started and from this trailer it appears to take the story right back to man’s first contact with alien life 70 years ago.

Recent reports have suggested that Sky One have successfully bid for the rights to air the revival in the UK, which seems totally appropriate since they were the first to show faith in the show before it was repeated on the BBC. If that’s the case, then British viewers should expect to see the episodes within 24 hours of their American counterparts.
