The Orville season 2 trailer debuted at San Diego Comic Con ahead of the sophomore season which begins later this year on FOX. While many expected a show created by and starring Seth MacFarlane to be puerile and disposable, the first season offered surprisingly smart sci-fi at times but perhaps that’s not surprising with creative talent involved including Jon Favreau and Star Trek veterans Jonathan Frakes and Brannon Braga. This isn’t so much a parody but Seth MacFarlane making Star Trek: The Next Generation fan films with a bigger budget that the original show ever had.

True, basically every episode is using a plot that’s turned up in Star Trek before but once the show settled into a rhythm and realised that not every scene needed a cheap laugh, it executed these conventions with style.

And there was plenty of talent in front of the camera with rare TV turns from Liam Neeson and Charlize Theron as well as Rob Lowe turning up all covered in blue makeup.

Jessica Szohr (Gossip Girl) has signed up as a new regular character to join series 1 cast members Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, Halston Sage, J. Lee and Mark Jackson.

The Orville season 2 will debut on 30 December 2018 on FOX.
