The Mummy: First trailer for Universal’s monster universe launch

Here’s the first trailer for The Mummy, the first film in Universal’s shared monster universe.  If this is a success, expect a new Jekyll and Hyde movie, a new take on Dracula and yet another Frankenstein. By casting Tom Cruise in the lead role, the studio are more or less guaranteeing this film will be an international hit. While they might be hoping for Avengers numbers, they’ll be doing well to match Cruise’s most successful movies with Mission: Impossible mid-sized hits.

It’s a far cry from the last incarnation of The Mummy which saw Brendan Fraser and Maria Bello fight the Egyptian resurrected royalty in a lush period setting. The visuals seem more reminiscent of stand action fare with lots of Tom Cruise running and a big set piece in London.

Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson and Courtney B. Vance also star with a special appearance by Russell Crowe as the exposition-spouting Doctor Jekyll.

The Mummy arrives in theatres on 9 June 2017
