The marketing people at Warner Bros have realised that they can use music effectively in trailers and apparently they’ve just watched Wayne’s World. With Bohemian Rhapsody setting the rhythm for the first trailer, The Sweet’s Ballroom Blitz is utilised to make this imagery feel more fun.
This is definitely a post-Batman v Superman trailer with the big blue boy scout name checked and the caped crusader finally making an appearance. Whether Ben Affleck will actually be anything more than a cameo remains to be seen but it would probably make most sense if he’s only seen as the villains see him – as a passing flight of terror.
Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn gets all of the best lines but for the second trailer in a row she’s highly sexualised in shots that look like they were specifically shot to impress teenage boys and put in the trailer. It’s not surprising but it’s jarring, disappointing and unnecessary. If you can get past that (and it’s a big if) this looks like it could be the most fun entry in the DC Expanded Universe, which to be fair, wouldn’t be too hard. Expect it to find the audience that enjoyed Deadpool and to outperform Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice at the global box office.
Will Smith, Jared Leto, Cara Delevingne, Jai Courtney and Viola Davis also star in a film directed by David Ayer.
