Suicide Squad: First look at DC’s villain-centric film

While it might be easy to say DC are pulling a copycat move, building a shared universe in the wake of Marvel’s success but it seems that they’re at least doing something interesting with it. Suicide Squad sees a Viola Davis as Amanda Waller who forms a task force out of some super villains including Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney). Jared Leto also stars as The Joker.

It’s a bold move from DC and presumably this will set up a number of elements to appear in future instalments of both solo Batman films starring Ben Affleck and Justice League movies. However the chronology of this new shared universe is yet to be fully established so this movie could be set contemporaneously to Man of Steel or could be set in the recent past of Gotham City before Batman retired. The possibilities are exciting.

Fresh from his success with Fury, David Ayer both writes and directs Suicide Squad which arrives in cinemas in August 2016, just a few months after Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice.
