New Mad Max: Fury Road trailer gets all nostalgic

The new Mad Max: Fury Road trailer is making the point that the latest film in the franchise is less of a reboot and more of a continuation of the classic franchise starring Mel Gibson. There are clips here from the original Mad Max and its sequels The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome. It’s all nicely done with everything from the font to the WB logo all evoking a nice sense of nostalgia. Then it all mixes in with footage from the new movie starring Tom Hardy…or at least it should blend in.

The most notable thing is how jarring the look of the new film is with the classic footage. Colour timing was just better in the pre-digital era and the orange/blue contrast so often discussed is really noticeable here. It will look great on the big screen but when shown so closely to footage from the 1980s, the differences – and not for the better – all become most clear.

Mad Max Fury Road is released 15 May 2015
