Mary Poppins Returns: The first full trailer

Cor Blimey! They’ve only gone and made a sequel to Mary Poppins. And Disney are very keen the emphasise that this is a sequel and not a reboot, this time set 25 years after the original. The exteriors have been painstakingly recreated, the iconography is all there with the repaired kite which framed the original being used to good effect in this trailer, Mary Poppins talking to her reflection and even the hand-drawn animation echoing the styles of times past. Also, Dick van Dyke being there doesn’t hurt.

Emily Blunt takes on the title role and appears to have settled on a slightly different voice for the character and she’ll be singing and dancing around London with Lin-Manuel Miranda as Bert’s successor Jack as she attempts to fix the lives of the grown up Banks children Michael (Ben Whishaw) and Jane (Emily Mortimer).

Here’s the official synopsis from Disney:

In Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” an all new original musical and sequel, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives following a personal loss. Emily Blunt stars as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any ordinary task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure and Lin-Manuel Miranda plays her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light—and life—to the streets of London.

Rob Marshall (Into the Woods) directs with music and original songs by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.  The film also stars Meryl Street as Topsy, Julie Walters as Ellen, Angela Lansbury as Balloon Lady, David Warner as Admiral Boom and Colin Firth as William Weatherall Wilkins.

Mary Poppins Returns arrives in cinemas 21 December 2018.
