“A place where myth and science meet”
From this trailer, it seems that Kong: Skull Island is going for a tone somewhere between Apocalypse Now and Guardians of the Galaxy, possibly not helped by the presence of John C. Reilly. It should surely be awe-inspiring and a little terrifying but it all feels a little bit quippy without any real sense of peril. The special effects and motion capture look amazing, but maybe they’re showing a little too much of the goods which just makes the effects feel a little bit less than special. Also, at this point, is utilising Samuel L. Jackson as an angry army Colonel not somewhat bordering on parody?
Also present from Marvel’s roster of stars are Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson alongside John Goodman, Corey Hawkins and Toby Kebbell.
This film is part of Warner Bros’ monsters shared universe which also includes Godzilla, with the two set to do battle in 2020’s Godzilla vs Kong, following the large reptiles second solo outing a year earlier.
The posters are lovely.
