Sulu or Chekov doing the gratuitous undressing scene would also have raised eyebrows. 😉
Haven’t seen Wrath of Khaaaaan but certain Trek bits have filtered into my brain over the years (such as Khaaaaan) so I knew Spock died in one of the films and was able to recognise the inversion of Kirk dying. However, I didn’t know about Marcus and Kirk so not only was the gratuitous undressing gratuitous,it was… well, it was gratuitous. I knew about it going in, still got surprised by how unsubtle it was.
Nemoy turning up with a cheat sheet was similarly poo. I can’t tell if those Earth uniforms that distractingly echoed Star Wars’s Imperials and Starship Troopers’s… troopers were meant to foreshadow Robocop’s militarism but it did seem an odd to see the protagonists walking around dressed, to my mind, as space Nazis.
