Classic Trailer Tuesday: The Terminator (1984)

Your future is in its hands

It’s easy to forget how gritty and dirty The Terminator is. Mostly its viewed through the blockbuster tinted glasses of Terminator 2: Judgement Day but the original film has much rougher edges. Filmed on a budget of just $6.5 million, this was James Cameron’s second directorial effort following Piranha 2: The Spawning.

Normally showing the best special effects from a film would ruin some crucial moments, but the future sequences in The Terminator aren’t really what this film is about. It’s smart marketing and makes the film look far more expensive than it was, highlighting the science fiction elements. Really it’s more of a chase film with a love story side plot. It works tremendously well and made Cameron’s name a force in the film business and cemented the place of Arnold Schwarzenegger in popular culture.
