CLASSIC TRAILER TUESDAY: BILL AND TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE
Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves star as Bill S. Preston Esquire and Ted Theodore Logan – the likable and unlikely saviours of the universe, but in order for the great ones and their music to create a new world order they need a little help from the future so they can pass their history test.
That probably makes it sound more complicated than it really is but really it’s a delightfully simple film. Two drop-out dudes are visited by Rufus, played with great cool by George Carlin, who gives them a phone booth which travels through time so they can learn enough to pass their history exam. So with their books as a guide, they raid history gathering famous figures like Billy the Kid, Joan of Arc, Genghis Khan and Beethoven so they can tell their class just what they make of modern day San Dimas, California.
It’s both a simple and original idea and the two characters at the centre are so endearing in their naivety that it’s impossible not to like them. The stakes are incredibly low – passing a test in school – but are raised, not only by the threat to send Ted to military school, but by the idea that the entire universe has based their existence on the great philosophy of Bill and Ted – be excellent to each other.
